At Haribo, the liquorice equator runs through northern Germany

No joke, since the Haribo range is based on the taste preferences in different countries, which, according to the company, vary greatly from one another, it has been found that people in Scandinavia and Northern Germany really like to eat licorice. The further south you go, fruit gum and jelly products sell significantly better. The liquorice equator runs through southern Lower Saxony!

The history of the global company is a rags-to-riches story: The candy maker Hans Riegel sets up his own business in Bonn in 1920 and makes his first confectionery in a laundry room under precarious conditions. But already under the name Haribo, which is made up of its first letters Ha Ri and Bonn. In 1922 Riegel invented the Dancing Bear, a prototype of the later Gold Bear. In 1925 he began producing licorice and in 1930 the slogan “Haribo makes children happy” appeared. After some ups and downs through the wars, the next family generation developed the Gold Bear in 1960, which became a huge success and laid the foundation for the brand's steep rise.
