De Beukelaer invents the double biscuit with the Prinzenrolle!
Antwerp is the cradle of the double biscuit: this is where biscuit manufacturer Edouard de Beukelaer invented the prince roll in 1870. Named in honor of Leopold II with the name Le Petit Prince fourré (Little Stuffed Prince). The founder's son built the Flemish biscuit factory E. de Beukelaer in the German town of Kempen (Lower Rhine) in the 1950s, and since 1964 the world-famous biscuits have borne the name Prinzenrolle.
